The Moon

£45.00

A miniature Moon, with 3d surface relief detail.

The LPF Moon globe is currently the only Moon globe that combines actual topographic detail and accurate colour mapping over the geometry. An impossibility to archive with normal manufacturing methods.

The globe's geometry has been generated using the latest LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbit) data. Over which colour is accurately applied during the printing process itself. The result is one of the closest approximation of a miniature Moon ever made.

The elevation has been slightly exaggerated on the z-axis since most features to real scale would be near imperceptible to human touch in the smaller globes. (exaggeration can be removed on demand however it is strongly suggested to only do so on globes 160mm or larger)

Notable features:

The anaglyph surface makes immediately obvious the difference between the smooth Mare (frozen lava seas) and the crater-heavy far side hemisphere.

The normally hidden from Earth view, slightly darker and vividly differently elevated South Pole–Aitken basin. The result of a past titanic impact.

When held in profile, it is also possible to perceive on the globe the slight "egg-shape" of the moon. The result of a real crust thickness asymmetry between the near and far side. (The moon is slightly tear-drop shaped, wide side facing the Earth).
